Mmm...Chili

image

Today is the 7th Annual Chili Cookout where I work.  Now, I did not enter this year.  I won two years ago and decided to retire on top.  But I love chili day here in the office.  Great stuff!  Mmmm....

An Arrogance of Power

image

Op-Ed in today’s Washington Post (Free Reg. Req’d).

There is a temptation that seeps into the souls of even the most righteous politicians and leads them to bend the rules, and eventually the truth, to suit the political needs of the moment.

QOTD

image

Jon, tonight the Vice President is standing by his decision to shoot Harry Whittington. Now according to the best intelligence available, there were quail hidden in the brush. Everyone believed at the time-there-were-quail in the brush. And while the quail turned out to be the 78 year old man. Even knowing that today, Mr. Cheney insists-he still would have shot Mr. Whittington in the face. - Rob Coddry, Senior Vice Presidential Firearms Mishap Analyst, The Daily Show.

Bridging the Divide on Abortion

Good column from E.J. Dionne in today’s Washington Post (Free Req. Reg’d):

I have more sympathy than most liberals with the right-to-life movement because I believe most right-to-lifers are animated not by sexism or some punitive attitude toward sexuality but by a genuine desire to defend the defenseless. Surely that view should encompass efforts to reduce the number of abortions in our nation. That’s why I hope Tom Suozzi finds imitators, and allies on both sides of the question.

Cheney Cited

image

Serves him right.

Vice President Dick Cheney has been given a warning citation for breaking Texas hunting law by failing to buy a $7 stamp allowing him to shoot upland game birds.

Let the Battle Begin!

image

Have hope my friends.  The battle has begun.  This post will be at the top of the site for a few days.  I want to make sure as many people as possible see it.  I found it on the Bulldog Manifesto, btw.

Whoops!

If this is true, the administration may have SERIOUSLY shot itself in the foot on this one.

According to current and former intelligence officials, Plame Wilson, who worked on the clandestine side of the CIA in the Directorate of Operations as a non-official cover (NOC) officer, was part of an operation tracking distribution and acquisition of weapons of mass destruction technology to and from Iran.

Personal Test of the Day

image

Yesterday, my glasses broke.  Don’t ask.  The frames snapped in two.  So after driving in to work blind (for those of us who are optically challenged, this can be a feat at 70 MPH down the interstate), I went over to Pearl Vision, where I had bought the original frames.  They guy there (after looking around for about 20 minutes) told me I was SOL.  They don’t carry the frames I had (which was necessary to keep the relatively new prescription lenses I just bought about 6 months ago) and they could recut the existing lenses I had.  So I left and called the wife.  What should I do?  Well, you need glasses, she said.  True.  Go back and get new lenses I guess.  Ok.  Back into Pearl.

They could centerly do what I needed, with just one hitch.  In order to get the transition lenses (clear-to-dark, which I had become very accustomed to - they are great!), I needed to wait two weeks.  Obviously, not a good choice.  They suggested I head over to LensCrafters if I needed something done today.  So off I went.  Mike at LensCrafters was very good.  I now have new glasses.  Woo-hoo!  I can see.

Bush Humor

From My Mom:

US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is giving President Bush his daily briefing on the war in Iraq.  He concludes by saying: “Yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed in an accident.”
“Oh Jesus Christ no!” the President exclaims.  “That’s terrible!”
His staff are stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the president sits, shaking, his head in hands.  Finally, the President looks up and asks, “Exactly how many is a brazillion?"

What I Believe

image

It is time for another edition of “What I Believe”

1.  Love is not something to be regulated, unless is can be shown to cause real (and not supposed) physical harm to either party or their potential offspring.
2.  Religions must be in a sorry state of affairs if a cartoon in a newspaper or someone not saying “Merry Christmas” to you can cause it damage.
3.  Everyone should have a dog.  Preferrably one from a shelter.
4.  President Bush lied to the American people about going to war with Iraq. Over 2000 Americans have died as a result.
5.  President Clinton lied to a grand jury about a blowjob.  No one died.  He was impeached.
6.  My brother is better at technical things than I am.
7.  I love my wife with all of my heart (Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetie).
8.  It is better to have lots of friends than lots of money (but the money does not hurt...)
9.  The Democrats have not capitalized on any of the president’s mistakes.  Maybe it is time for a new entity to join the party.
10.  Your family values are not the same as mine.
