Easter Eggs in Ubuntu

image

Some of these are fun.

We’ve written a lot lately about serious, geeky topics, like virtualization.  But we here at WorksWithU also like to have fun from time to time.  To prove it, here’s a look at some of the hilarious–or at least amusing–Easter eggs and other jokes hidden in Ubuntu that you may never have heard of.

Dell says Ubuntu is safer than Windows

image

Well, duh.

Linux has a powerful booster in the never-ending debate over what OS is safest from malware and spyware: Dell.

Dell’s Ubuntu site has a “Top 10” list of “things you should know about Ubuntu.” No. 6? Ubuntu is safer than Microsoft Windows

Better Online Banking?

This is from Lifehacker.com. I am am regular Ubuntu user at home. I have no M$ Windows in my house and haven’t for the last year or so i.e. I HIGHLY recommend this solution.

After reporting on how thieves used Windows malware to steal sizable sums from small banks and businesses, a Washington Post reporter recommends a fairly air-tight solution for net banking: boot up Linux from a live CD or USB

Man The Battlestations!

image

Is my favorite Linux Distro under attack? This guy seems to think so:

Over the past few years, Ubuntu has slowly emerged as the champion among Linux distros – having great application support, a huge and active community and having begun making major inroads in the netbook/laptop market through the deal with Dell, UNR / Easy-Peasy remix and through an announced effort to integrate with Moblin. The only other netbook competitor being the aged Windows XP, and other Linux distros. However, Ubuntu’s gains are now under attack on all fronts from some really big names in the computer industry.  Ubuntu runs the risk of being squeezed out of its current spot in the tech and linux world.

The Jaunty Jackalope

image

Today I sit in my favorite non-corporate coffee shop with my new Acer Aspire One preloaded with Ubuntu 9.04. I have to say I am impressed mostly with both the hardware and OS. On the AA1, the keyboard is really small (the entire machine is ONLY 9” across or so). It will probably take some getting used to over time. The OS ran into only one hiccup with the wireless connections (but I think that was mostly like a combination of OS AND hardware issues). But it is fixed and I am up and running. With no Micro$oft.

Ah....smell that? That is freedom!

Onward to 2009

image

Today, I unhitched the family wagon from the dreaded Evil Empire Microsoft. I took my wife’s laptop, the last M$ Windows product in the house, and turned it into a linux box. I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it. It installed in about an hour and it worked perfectly. M$ = 0, Freedom = 1. Boo-yah bitches!

Happy Birthday Linux

Yesterday, in 1991, was the first post by Linus Torvalds about Linux:

Do you pine for the nice days of minix-1.1, when men were men and wrote their own device drivers? Are you without a nice project and just dying to cut your teeth on a OS you can try to modify for your needs? Are you finding it frustrating when everything works on minix? No more all-nighters to get a nifty program working? Then this post might be just for you grin

As I mentioned a month(?) ago, I’m working on a free version of a minix-lookalike for AT-386 computers. It has finally reached the stage where it’s even usable (though may not be depending on what you want), and I am willing to put out the sources for wider distribution. It is just version 0.02 (+1 (very small) patch already), but I’ve successfully run bash/gcc/gnu-make/gnu-sed/compress etc under it.

As my life revolves around a linux derivative, Happy Birthday Big Guy!

Note to Mrs. Chief Ninja Monkie

image

I love you honey:

Though on its face it might seem trivial, pointless, a terrible way to waste a beautiful afternoon, etc., solitaire has unquestionably transformed the way we live and work. Computer solitaire propelled the revolution of personal computing, augured Microsoft’s monopolistic tendencies, and forever changed office culture. It has also helped the human race survive innumerable conference calls and airplane trips. If solitaire is not the most important computer program of all time, it is at least in the top two, along with Minesweeper.

And yes, even I play solitaire on my Ubuntu box.
