Happy Birthday!
Today is the birthday of National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. I have been listening to this morning news program at least 20 years (Thanks Dad!). It is so much a part of my morning routine, I get irritated when am I traveling and can’t find it on the radio. Also, November is the 40th (!!!) birthday of Sesame Street. Google is celebrating it in a classic style.

Excuse Us...But Could We See Your Penis?
Huh?
South African athletics officials have rallied behind controversial new running star Caster Semenya, who won the women’s world 800 meters title just hours after the sport’s governing body asked for the 18-year-old’s gender to be verified.

Proud Hubby
You know, sometimes in all of the “excitement” of the events of the world, we forget to notice the slightly more important things in life. Last night, my darling bride got an award. She teaches Tae Kwon Do at All-Star Martial Arts here in Hagerstown (yes, she CAN kick my ass so don’t ask). She got an award from the head instructor thanking her for her dedication to her students. In fact, she is an awesome instructor with those kids. It is her calling I think.
So anyway, I love you honey. Great job!

It Is Almost Football Time Again!
In the still-hard-to-fathom collapse of the Nebraska defense last season, one fact remains that the Husker offense didn’t always do its counterpart any favors.
Bill Callahan’s decision to try and trade blows with some teams left the Blackshirts’ chin exposed. NU’s inability to run the football or to get ahead against others left the defense out there, bloodied and staggering.
But there was no discussion Monday at Big 12 media days of the Huskers drastically pulling back the reins offensively next season with the defensive-minded Bo Pelini as head coach.
I finally get to hear regular Husker action this year on XM. It has a Big 12 channel that should carry a fair amount of Husker games this season. Finally, a chance to feel like I am back home. Woo-hoo!

Depressing Stuff
From a column by Thomas Friedman:
People want to do nation-building. They really do. But they want to do nation-building in America.
They are not only tired of nation-building in Iraq and in Afghanistan, with so little to show for it. They sense something deeper — that we’re just not that strong anymore. We’re borrowing money to shore up our banks from city-states called Dubai and Singapore. Our generals regularly tell us that Iran is subverting our efforts in Iraq, but they do nothing about it because we have no leverage — as long as our forces are pinned down in Baghdad and our economy is pinned to Middle East oil.
Our president’s latest energy initiative was to go to Saudi Arabia and beg King Abdullah to give us a little relief on gasoline prices. I guess there was some justice in that. When you, the president, after 9/11, tell the country to go shopping instead of buckling down to break our addiction to oil, it ends with you, the president, shopping the world for discount gasoline.
You have to read the whole thing to get the full scope of how depressing our current situation is.

Anyone Want to Own a Radio Station?
Check this out:
This October, from the 12th through the 19th, the FCC will open a window to apply for new, full power non-commercial educational (NCE) radio frequencies. If you want to apply for a non-commercial radio station, this is your one chance for any foreseeable future.
The eligible channels that will be allocated in this window are designated as non-commercial educational (NCE) stations. Most are located between 88.1 MHz and 91.9 MHz on the FM dial. But there are also a few commercial channels specifically reserved for NCE use, and you can apply for these as well.
These will be full power stations. Full power stations can be any power, between 100 watts up to the 100,000 watts, depending on your location! The actual power level will depend on the geographic coordinates where you propose to put your transmitter and antenna.
You can apply for any available non-commercial frequencies in the United States. You can only apply for a frequency (spot on the radio dial) that does not conflict with any existing stations in your geographic region. Finding a frequency will follow current FCC interference rules.

Bush Commutes Libby's Sentence
I am calling bullshit here. The president of the United States says he respects the jury process.
President Bush commuted Monday the prison term of former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, facing 30 months in prison after a federal court convicted him of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to investigators. Bush has only commuted the jail term which means that the conviction remains on Libby’s record and he must still pay a $250,000 fine.
But not enough the let the legally viable jury-imposed sentence stand. He thinks:
Bush called the sentence “excessive,” and suggested that Libby will pay a big enough price for his conviction.
What a complete CROCK of SHIT! OMG! What a complete “fuck you” to the American jurisprudence system. And I am sure there is nothing that can be done. Like pardons (which he THANKFULLY did not get), I bet commutations are simply presidential prerogative and beyond reproach. Oh well, at least Libby still has to pay $250,000 in fines. I bet there is a legal defense fund set up for that though.

All Things Baseball Today
With the season opening yesterday/today, it is important to note that this is the last season the Washington Nationals will play in RFK Stadium. Yes, the Nats are getting a $600 Million stadium. That is a colossal waste of money in my opinion for a baseball stadium when they could have easily refurbished RFK for a lot less money. Plus money could be better spent on more needed things. You can read “Why I Hate DC” for his (hilarious) opinions on the stadium. In the meantime, you can watch the new stadium being built here on Stadium-Cam.
